She told me she felt dismissed, irrelevant, invisible.
She told me she didn’t feel as though she mattered; she couldn’t recall the last time she’d been validated.
She wondered what was wrong with her; what she could have done differently and what she should now do over.
“She” is a leader– a high potential senior manager who has worked for the same tech firm for the past decade.
She loves her company, but she doesn’t think they love her back.
You know what that is, don’t you? It’s the percentage of women in her company: A little more than a token, a lot less than a commitment to diversity.
These are her words, verbatim; but “she” is any one of tens of millions of women in the workforce.
· PAY DISPARITY
· DOUBLE STANDARDS OF LEADERSHIP
· LACK OF FEMALE ROLE MODELS
· WORK / LIFE IMBALANCE
· SEXUAL HARASSMENT
WE CALL THESE WOMEN’S ISSUES, BUT THEY’RE NOT.
They are family issues.
They are organizational issues.
They are economic issues.
They are societal issues.
Companies don’t resolve issues …. Individuals do.
Societies don’t stop discrimination …. Individuals do.
Policies don’t advance women into leadership roles …. Individuals do.
Legislation doesn’t advocate for women …. Individuals do.
Behind every one of these issues are individuals.
We can do something about this.
We can start today.
